[Press Release] Space Shift Launches Satellite-Powered AI for Wide-Area Tree Health Assessment – First Product under New SateAIs 環 -Environment- Sub-brand –

Space Shift, Inc. has launched a new service that enables collective health diagnosis of street trees across vast areas. While tree inspections have traditionally relied on arborists and other experts walking on-site to evaluate trees one by one, this service enables wide-area, highly efficient implementations. 

By combining optical satellite data with AI analysis, this service resolves the challenges of monitoring and inspecting street and park trees—traditionally a heavy burden for municipalities and road authorities. 

About SateAIs 

Based on the concept “Empowering Operations with Satellite + AI Analysis,” SateAIs is Space Shift’s satellite data analysis brand, systematizing its algorithms by use case and delivery format. In recent years, against the backdrop of the TNFD recommendations and the nature-positive movement, demand for quantitative natural capital monitoring among corporations and municipalities has been growing. In response to these trends, Space Shift has established the new sub-brand “SateAIs 環 -Environment-” for environmental and natural capital monitoring, launching the “Tree Health Assessment AI”  focused on street tree and park tree management  as its first product.

Tree Health Assessment AI (SateAIs  -Environment-) 

Tree Health Assessment AI is an analysis service that uses high-resolution optical satellite data and AI to automatically assess the health of trees within a designated area. Based on vegetation indices extracted from satellite imagery, it identifies trees suspected of dying or declining and ranks priority sites for on-site inspection. 

By covering a wide range of street trees and park trees all at once, the service streamlines tree management operations — from annual inspection planning to narrowing down on-site survey targets — within limited personnel and budget constraints. The service is expected to be utilized by municipalities, road managers, landscaping companies, and greenspace management organizations.

Proof of Concept 

A proof-of-concept study was conducted in collaboration with Nihonkai Consutant CO., Ltd., targeting specific tree species in parts of Ishikawa Prefecture. A clear correlation was confirmed between vegetation indices extracted from optical satellite data and the actual health condition of the trees, achieving assessment accuracy of 65–75% for specific tree species and suggesting a potential reduction in survey workload of up to 40%. Based on these results, this technology is positioned not as a replacement for full-coverage field surveys, but as a screening tool to narrow down trees requiring on-site inspection.

Future Outlook 

Going forward, Space Shift will expand the training data for the Tree Health Assessment AI to broaden the range of target tree species and regions, while advancing its lineup of analysis services that support wide-area natural capital monitoring under “SateAIs 環 -Environment-“. Through co-creation with municipalities, corporations, and research institutions, Space Shift will accelerate the social implementation of satellite data and AI in the environmental field.
