[NEWS] Space Shift Joins JAXA’s Space Strategic Fund Project Led by Tellus — Accelerating Social Implementation of Satellite Data and Building a Space Information Ecosystem through AI Analysis —

Space Shift is pleased to announce our participation as a collaborative partner in the project “Creating a Space Information Industry Ecosystem through AI-Driven Satellite Data Utilization Platforms.” This initiative is part of the technology development theme “Advanced Technologies for Accelerating Earth Observation Satellite Data Utilization,” which was selected for the second call of the Space Strategy Fund (SSF) program conducted by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The project is led by Tellus Inc. (Headquarters: Shinjuku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hideto Yamazaki).

SPACE SHIFT KV

In this project, four organizations will collaborate to accelerate the process from development to social implementation by leveraging their respective strengths: Tellus, which provides a satellite data platform and computing infrastructure; Degas Ltd., with its AI development capabilities and domain-specific expertise; NEC Corporation, with years of experience in AI development and satellite data analysis; and Space Shift, with its deep knowledge of satellite data analysis AI and social implementation.

Within this initiative, Space Shift plans to focus on developing advanced models utilizing domestic foundational models and collective intelligence models, as well as creating new business opportunities.

About the AI-Driven Satellite Data Utilization Platform

In recent years, the proliferation of small satellites has heightened expectations for satellite data utilization. However, challenges remain, such as the high level of specialized expertise required, which makes integrated data application difficult.

To address these issues, the initiative “Creating a Space Information Industry Ecosystem through AI-Driven Satellite Data Utilization Platforms” will focus on the following four development areas and activities:

  1. Development of domestic foundational models utilizing Japanese environmental satellite data
  2. Establishment of initial monetization as infrastructure and ecosystem building
  3. Construction of a multi-modal “Collective Intelligence Model” system
  4. Development of a profit-sharing model that quantifies the contribution of data providers and ensures fair value distribution.
  5. Creation of new businesses leveraging the “Collective Intelligence Model”

Through these initiatives, we will establish a common technological infrastructure centered on domestic foundational models utilizing Japanese satellite data, as well as multi-modal “Collective Intelligence Models” that integrate multiple satellite and external data sources. By doing so, we aim to encourage the entry of a wide range of players, including those from non-space sectors, expanding the market for satellite data utilization and creating new industries.

Building a Space Information Industry Ecosystem

The foundational models developed in this project will be released on “Tellus AI Playground,” allowing interested companies to experience them firsthand. From the middle to the latter stages of the project, we will incorporate user requirements into development specifications, leading to concrete service implementation.

By releasing a diverse range of foundational models on “Tellus AI Playground,” we will encourage new entrants from various industries and accelerate the creation of applications and services that contribute to the expansion of the satellite data market. Simultaneously, by providing a seamless analysis environment including satellite data and GPUs through Tellus, we aim to build a “circular ecosystem” where new foundational models are continuously generated.

Through these initiatives, we will promote the use of satellite data in non-space sectors and contribute to the “democratization of satellite data.” Furthermore, we will position satellite data as a vital social infrastructure and advance the establishment of a sustainable and competitive industrial structure that meets the needs of society.

Message from Kazushi Motomura, CTO of Space Shift Inc.

We are deeply honored to participate in this project as a collaborative partner. Space Shift has long been dedicated to the development of AI technologies for satellite data analysis. In this initiative, we will leverage our expertise to contribute to the development of advanced models—utilizing both domestic foundational models and collective intelligence models—and to the creation of new business opportunities.

By lowering the barriers to entry for satellite data and promoting its utilization across a broader range of industries, we are committed to doing our utmost to contribute to the further growth and evolution of Japan’s space information industry.
